I am deeply perturbed.

I was just browsing an old post in [livejournal.com profile] hp_britglish, and someone made reference to how Jim Dale pronounces a name in the audiobook. Surely, surely, the audiobooks in America have Stephen Fry reading them? Surely? Clearly, anything else is just wrong.

I'm afraid not (it is Just Plain Wrong). I listed to the NPR news quiz (hilarious) and the week the last Harry Potter came out, Jim Dale was a guest for the 'Not My Job' round and they were asking questions about pronounciation. What is the point in having two different versions? Is it for copyright purposes? Stephen Fry has got to be the definitive.

Alas no, the American books are all read by Jim Dale, I actually have a copy of the Deathly Hallows read by him, and whilst it is mostly inoffensive, it is nothing like the beautiful reading that Stephen Fry gives.

Sadly the Americans are missing out on the wonderfulness of Fry.

And they don't seem to notice! I went over to Amazon.com to find out about the Jim Dale thing, and there was a forum-y bit where they discussed who was better, and they were all like, 'ooh, Jim Dale, he's so much better' AND one person was complaining because Stephen, darling Stephen, didn't 'tone down' his accent sufficiently. WTF?! He's ENGLISH. It's an ENGLISH book! Are they *mental*?

1) They're Harry Potter fans
2) They're American
3) They're discussing the audio readings on Amazon.

The "are they mental" is therefore already heavily implied!

Unfortunately it is true. I have an American friend who always gets them because he loves how Jim Dale reads it. I was shocked when I found out too, so I sent him a copy of the British audiobook so he could hear how much better Stephen Fry is ;)
