It was a very very small owl, that she used to be able to keep in the pocket of her apron. Also, it is now stuffed and in a museum somewhere in Nondol (the owl that is).
I do indeed. And have never been so glad NOT to be "Little Owl"...
*giggling*
I have also just made the executive decision that I may not allow anyone in my Unit to be called "Little Owl" because I am not sure larking about in a nurse's pocket is something to be encouarged... especially not in LSE, where the Ubernurse stalks by night...
(oh, and Liss: "Miss Nightingale’s influence on the development of Belgian nursing was clearly evident in two other items: a Nightingale pledge written (in ornamental lettering) in French combined with Flemish vocabulary, and ‘Flambeau’ [torch]: an ink drawing showing Florence Nightingale passing the torch of nursing on to a nurse of the Cavell Institute. An edelweiss flower, the emblem of the school, is attached with a blue ribbon to the top corner of the drawing." I feel this has ramifications for the future of the EP, frankly...)
2) Men are able to be Unit Helpers... (they are not allowed to wear uniform though... which, given the design of the uniform, I think they should all be busy being grateful for, frankly...)
1) Yep, I have lots of skills, not least of which is being able to teach and examine Guides in First Aid (which I have done many times for various groups here).
2) I have to wear a much worse uniform in SJAB, the Guide one really isn't that bad. Honest :)
I'm just glad that I get to wear the black and white uniform (that does actually look quite smart) rather than the "greens" ambulance workers are so fond of.
I'd rather we still wore the Hospitilers uniform myself.

I think Florence-and-her-owl is one of those (sadly many) things I randomly-knew-but-had-forgotten...
I googled Miss Nightingale & her ornithological leanings & discovered what I personally considered to be a rather amusing FAQ about her... http://www.florence-nightingale-avenging-angel.co.uk/faq.htm

That was indeed an amusing FAQ session :)

would you be interested in coming back into Guiding in a leadership capacity...?
(sorry, it's like a compulsion...)

1) I am already in a leadership capacity within the St John Ambulance Brigade.
and
2) I didn't think boys were allowed to be Guide Leaders?

They may look bad, but atleast there is an element of comfort to them!
Sadly I can't find any pictures of the St John Uniform (complete with peak cap)

Okay, I'll bite - what was the Hospitilers uniform like then?

Hospitilers uniform...er, have you ever seen the film Kingdom of Heaven?

There are Hospitilars in that. They wore stuff rather like the Crusaders, but black with a white cross as opposed to white with a red cross.

My sister was the devotee. I was just in the room... (but kind of intrigued by it all, to be fair...)

The first series was great, and I loved it dearly. The next four weren't so good.
