Florence Nightingale used to go on holiday with her pet owl. Who knew? Also, the hospital at Scutari had a pet tortoise. Just goes to show...

please tell me the owl was a Snowy Owl... because a) it would explain a lot and b) it would amuse me greatly

*giggling like unto the proverbial loon*

It was a very very small owl, that she used to be able to keep in the pocket of her apron. Also, it is now stuffed and in a museum somewhere in Nondol (the owl that is).

It was a Little Owl, not a Snowy Owl, sorry.

And was called Athena she rescued it in Greece...

Well, as Owls go, I'm generally considered to be fairly small...

I think Florence-and-her-owl is one of those (sadly many) things I randomly-knew-but-had-forgotten...

I googled Miss Nightingale & her ornithological leanings & discovered what I personally considered to be a rather amusing FAQ about her... http://www.florence-nightingale-avenging-angel.co.uk/faq.htm

Aha, do you work with Brownies by any chance?

That was indeed an amusing FAQ session :)

I do indeed. And have never been so glad NOT to be "Little Owl"...

*giggling*

I have also just made the executive decision that I may not allow anyone in my Unit to be called "Little Owl" because I am not sure larking about in a nurse's pocket is something to be encouarged... especially not in LSE, where the Ubernurse stalks by night...

(oh, and Liss: "Miss Nightingale’s influence on the development of Belgian nursing was clearly evident in two other items: a Nightingale pledge written (in ornamental lettering) in French combined with Flemish vocabulary, and ‘Flambeau’ [torch]: an ink drawing showing Florence Nightingale passing the torch of nursing on to a nurse of the Cavell Institute. An edelweiss flower, the emblem of the school, is attached with a blue ribbon to the top corner of the drawing." I feel this has ramifications for the future of the EP, frankly...)

*thinks*

would you be interested in coming back into Guiding in a leadership capacity...?

(sorry, it's like a compulsion...)

Date: 2006-02-20 04:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keladeekadys.livejournal.com
I would love to, but.

1) I am already in a leadership capacity within the St John Ambulance Brigade.

and

2) I didn't think boys were allowed to be Guide Leaders?

From: [identity profile] xanantha.livejournal.com
1) Think of all the skills you could transfer

2) Men are able to be Unit Helpers... (they are not allowed to wear uniform though... which, given the design of the uniform, I think they should all be busy being grateful for, frankly...)

Date: 2006-02-20 04:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keladeekadys.livejournal.com
1) Yep, I have lots of skills, not least of which is being able to teach and examine Guides in First Aid (which I have done many times for various groups here).

2) I have to wear a much worse uniform in SJAB, the Guide one really isn't that bad. Honest :)

*lesigh*

well, you can't blame a Guide for trying...

and have you SEEN the stripy shirts??? (http://www.guidingessentials.org.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/GirlGuiding/576/23373#)

Date: 2006-02-20 04:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keladeekadys.livejournal.com
Yes I have seen the stripy shirts.

They may look bad, but atleast there is an element of comfort to them!

Sadly I can't find any pictures of the St John Uniform (complete with peak cap)

I have seen the SJA stuff... it is... interesting? (not giggling really... much...)

I'm just glad that I get to wear the black and white uniform (that does actually look quite smart) rather than the "greens" ambulance workers are so fond of.

I'd rather we still wore the Hospitilers uniform myself.

Date: 2006-02-20 06:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] xanantha.livejournal.com
Yes, it does look smart. But it does also make vair clear why "Badgers" are so-called...

Okay, I'll bite - what was the Hospitilers uniform like then?

Date: 2006-02-20 06:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keladeekadys.livejournal.com
Ah Badgers, they're a relatively new invention in SJAB (er yes Den, from 1987, and you were one of the first, don't you feel old now).

Hospitilers uniform...er, have you ever seen the film Kingdom of Heaven?

Date: 2006-02-20 07:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keladeekadys.livejournal.com
Ah well.

There are Hospitilars in that. They wore stuff rather like the Crusaders, but black with a white cross as opposed to white with a red cross.

now why be helpful when you can confuse people?

Exactly.

I think it comes with being an assistant manager, you can't be to clear in what you say first time around.

yay, another The Tribe fan!

Did you ever visit the Tribe website? and perchance sign up to the bulletin board?

Date: 2006-02-20 08:18 pm (UTC)

Not to my knowledge. I mean, I DO do strange things when pre-post fit, but as far as I am aware, that was not one of them...

My sister was the devotee. I was just in the room... (but kind of intrigued by it all, to be fair...)

Ah thats a shame, The Tribe was my first internet experience :) Happy times were had there :)

The first series was great, and I loved it dearly. The next four weren't so good.

It also didn't help that they had some disasterous casting choices and very very silly storylines.

And do you think liss is going to mind that we've sort of taken over her journal for most of the day?
