In a moment of quiet, John remembers an article he had once read, a long time ago, about a father who had embezzled his children’s college funds. He had shown it to Mary; they had both been disgusted. What kind of father would steal from his children?
The kind that wanted them to stay alive, he found out in later years. The kind that wanted them to be safe. The kind who couldn’t afford to run out of ammo, or salt, or gas.
In a moment of quiet, John wonders just how much he has fucked up his sons’ lives.
