Re: A Turbulent Term
Jun. 29th, 2005 10:58 amFor those of you who have missed the current discussion on the Girlsown list about the worst school stories, I thought I would bestow upon you Sue Sims' survey of the subject (rep'd with per.):
>By the time you got to this point I just couldn't stop laughing. Just
how long is this book to fit it all in?<
240 pages. It is very bad - I'd forgotten the plot. But can it compete with
a fourth-former dressing up as the headmistress and taking everyone in; or
the popular leader of the Fourth being forced out of a high window at the end
of red-hot poker wielded by Doris Simmonds, the pimply-faced Black Sheep of
the Fourth? (Both from 'The Hoax of a Lifetime', J. Radford-Evans.) Or what
about an entire house rebelling against a horrible housemistress - or
headmistress? Can't be bothered to check), taking over the house and barring out
authority, who retaliates by gassing the entire Fourth Form. (Girls will be
Girls, same author). Or the popular leader of the Fourth being shot by a German
firing squad - or rather, being rescued just in time by her best friend who
has disguised herself as an British army officer? (Once upon an Island - also
J R-E, surprise, surprise.)
I want these books!!
