Publishing Chalet School Short Stories
Sep. 6th, 2005 11:28 amThe time has come, the Squeenie said, to talk of many things. And, being the sort of site this is, that mainly means talking of books. And publishing.
In the wake of the success of Lesley’s book, and doubtless the success of Pat’s, I am toying with the idea of, in a similar way, of publishing a book of short stories about the Chalet School. Not mine, obviously, but yours. I would be looking, depending on length, at including anything from about 10 up to 25 stories based in the Chalet School universe. The really good stuff, that makes fanfiction such a joy to read.
Now, I am including the guidelines below. Please could you post, firstly with any questions, and secondly to say whether or not you would be interested in buying such a book. I don’t really anticipate anything happening for a year or so, as it will take a while to give people time to write, and for me to decide what to include, not to mention the publishing process itself. As with Lesley and Pat, I would need sufficient pre-orders to go ahead with publishing.
Guidelines
1. Stories should be no longer than 10,000 words. There is no minimum limit. Of course, I will be as flexible as possible, but if your story would fill half a book by itself, it’s a bit long for these purposes!
2. Stories should not contradict any events or characterisations etc in EBD’s books (though you do not have to regard fillers-in as canon).
3. Stories do not have to use the style or story structure of EBD’s, but they must be in the spirit (more or less) of the original books.
4. You may include crossovers with other EBD books if you like (though preferably with books that she crosses herself, eg The School by the River or Lorna).
5. You do not need to be a member of the CBB, or anything else for that matter, to submit or nominate a story.
6. Please feel free to submit or nominate a story that may have been already published on the internet. However, I would very much like to include some previously unpublished stories.
In the first instance, I would like submissions or nominations by the end of October. However, this is by no means definitive, especially if you are writing something new. I would just like to get a feel of what people would like to be included. I can’t give a more definite cut-off point at the moment, but will do so when things are clearer, however, I would imagine that sometime in March/April would be likely.
Please e-mail any nominations or submissions (with a .doc attachment or link) to me at liss@chaletian.com.
If you are a member of another community or mailing list you think would be interested in this, please feel more than free (indeed, see me encourage it) to pimp away.
