chaletian: (svh jess flirts)
Hee. I've been reading quite a lot of coverage about the upcoming US election (mostly for amusement value because Sarah Palin is hilarious*), and was much entertained by a comment on this post:

"I'm trying to decide whether this presidential campaign is for realsies or whether it's some awesome viral marketing scam a la Blair Witch. Because it looks too much like the chick flick of the season and I'm waiting for Colin Firth, Hugh Grant or Clive Owen to make an appearance.

And they haven't yet.

I feel cheated."

* Actually, I really, truly hate that McCain picked her for his VP choice because surely nothing is more damaging to feminism that women being touted for high positions because they're women and then being transparently incapable of competing. Say what you like about Hillary Clinton, but she was very clearly a woman who had the knowledge and intellectual chops to fulfil that kind of role, leaving aside any questions of executive experience/integrity/whatever. I mean, Palin is just Bush all over again, except possibly more hopeless. What's that about? Apparently there was a poll somewhere (some US news agency/newpaper/I can't quite remember and can't be bothered to find it again - go me and my own sense of responsible reporting *g*) where when asked whether they thought Palin would be capable of leading and being good at foreign policy (yes, I'm paraphrasing wildly here), 57% of respondents said no. Really, I'm just wondering what exactly the other 43% could possibly be thinking. And what, really, was McCain thinking? That because she was a social conservative and a woman and a little bit with the crazy religious, that would make her popular enough to win him the election? Fundamentally, I'm just going to have to say I DON'T UNDERSTAND AMERICA!!
