Ee, give me an inch and I'll take a mile... Set several years later, after Devil's Trap and during In My Time Of Dying.

Rating: PG
Characters/Pairing: Con, Mary-Lou, Jane, Stacie, mentions of John, Mary, Dean and Sam
Summary: During IMTOD, Mary-Lou does everything she can to save Dean, to the horror of the others. Somewhat angst-ridden, despite the cracky premise.
After the events of the last twenty-four hours, Jane had collapsed on a sofa in the Guardian Angel common room. Sam was all right, at any rate, and that was the main thing as far as she was concerned. The past year had been a difficult one, and Jane was dreadfully afraid it wasn’t going to get any better. She was telling Eustacia all about recent events (the poor darling was always so eager to know everything, rather pathetic, but one could completely understand after what had happened to Mary), when Mary-Lou walked in, looking rather shame-faced, Jane thought indignantly, and quite right too.
“Where on earth’ve you been?” she demanded, sitting up straight. “Darling, really! Things have been absolutely disastrous, Con and I have been hovering round that dreadful hospital like positive poltergeists, and you’ve been nowhere! And when Dean’s so badly hurt! Honestly, Mary-Lou, I hope you’re ashamed of yourself.”
“I’ve been in meetings,” said Mary-Lou heavily, sitting down. “Don’t shriek, so, Jane, please.”
“What meetings?” asked Jane, unwilling to let Mary-Lou’s dereliction of duty go. “Mary-Lou, Dean’s dying! What could possibly be more important than that?”
“You don’t understand,” said Mary-Lou, her voice dull. Jane was about to demand that she explain, when the door swung open with such force it banged against the wall. Con stood there, her usually pretty face so dark with rage and sorrow that, for a moment, time seemed to stop in the common room.
“Wh-what’s happened?” asked Stacie, falteringly, but Con ignored her, her gaze fixed on Mary-Lou, who resolutely failed to meet it.
“How dare you,” she said, her voice low and full of suppressed emotion. “Oh, Mary-Lou. How could you?”
“I did what had to be done,” said Mary-Lou stiffly.
“What had to be done? It was his time! It’s tragic, and I know you wish you could have stopped it, but…” She broke off, and they could see how close she was to tears. “We can’t always save them, Mary-Lou. It’s their nature. They’re only human. But to do this… to sacrifice John like this… How did you do it?” Mary-Lou remained silent, and Con seemed to grow in stature.
“Tell me!” she thundered. Jane reached out blindly and clung to Stacie’s hand as Mary-Lou lifted her eyes to look at Con, defensiveness in every line in her posture. She knows, thought Jane dully. Whatever she did, she knows it was wrong. Oh, Mary-Lou, what have you done?
“You know how much John loves the boys,” said Mary-Lou defiantly, standing up. “I barely needed to do anything. He would have sacrificed himself.”
“Not without some help,” shouted Con. “How did you do it?”
“I pulled in some favours.” Mary-Lou shrugged. “Dean’s my responsibility, Con. I have to keep him safe.”
“You arranged a deal,” said Con accusingly.
“It was for the best…”
“The best? The best! John is in Hell, Mary-Lou!” Jane’s hand tightened convulsively on Stacie’s, and they both stared, horrified, at Dean’s guardian angel.
“Hell?” murmured Stacie. “Oh, Con…” Con bit her lip, and tried to control her breathing.
“After everything he’s been through; everything he’s had to do… It was Dean’s time. It was his time.” She broke down and wept, and Jane rushed to her side, doing her best to comfort her – but how could you comfort an angel whose charge has gone to Hell? Stacie stood, crossed to Mary-Lou, and very deliberately slapped her. Mary-Lou’s hand rose to her cheek, but she couldn’t meet Stacie’s gaze.
“I’m so ashamed of you,” said Stacie, everything calm but for two points of red on her pale cheeks. Mary-Lou said nothing, but left the room, and Stacie turned to Jane.
“Go to Sam,” she said softly. “He’ll need you. I’ll take care of Con.” Jane nodded gratefully and, with a final stroke of Con’s hair, returned to Sam. Stacie sighed, and sat beside Con, pulling the younger angel towards her.
“He longed for her, Stacie,” sobbed Con, clutching at Stacie’s frock. “And now they’ll never be together.”
“Shh,” said Stacie soothingly. “Don’t fret, Con. We’ll find away.” John and Mary Winchester might be parted, in life and after, but their angels would bring them together somehow. Stacie and Con swore it.
