Summary: The Winchesters meet the President.

President Bartlet’s question had everyone leaping to their feet, and after a moment’s silence, everyone began attempting some kind of answer. As the President’s gaze traveled round the room, they fell silent one by one, until only Sam Winchester was left stammering that really, burning down the White House wasn’t necessary. One quirk of the President’s eyebrow, and he too held his tongue.

Dean Winchester took another bite of his doughnut and shrugged. “Hey, it’s not like we want to,” he said. “But when you’ve got a ghost doing the kind of damage this one is, and, y’know, what with the body being buried under concrete, burning something down might be the only option.”

Leo groaned. CJ sank down on the sofa and covered her face with her hand. Josh stood, arms akimbo, waiting for some kind of reaction.

“Leo,” said the President, “do we have a body buried under concrete in the White House?”

“It’s… a possibility,” said Leo reluctantly.

“I see. And when we you all going to let me in on this little adventure?”

“We were – hoping we wouldn’t have to,” said Josh.

“Well, I can see why you might hope that.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Ghosts, Josh?” Josh shifted uncomfortably.

“Sir…”

“I mean, I remember your reaction to Abbey’s ouija board.”

“Yes, sir.”

“It wasn’t favourable.”

“No, sir.”

“In fact, if I recall correctly, she wouldn’t speak to you for quite some time.”

“Ah, that’s true, sir.”

“And now you’re saying we have a ghost. A ghost that, presumably, is responsible for the recent incidents?”

“The evidence is quite compelling,” said Leo. “Mr President, I understand your dismay, but I really think that it would be best if you leave this to…” He broke off. The President was sitting down next to CJ, and all but rubbing his hands together in glee.

“Did you know,” he said, ignoring the muted groans that this opening elicited, “ that a Greek philosopher called Athenodoros once staked out a haunted house? He saw a spectre with rattling chains. The next day, he told the magistrates about it, and they dug up the spot, and found the ghost’s skeleton. Remarkable.”

“Remarkable,” said Toby, barely a trace of sarcasm audible. Bartlet turned to him.

“Do I detect a note of skepticism, Toby?”

Toby gingerly touched the back of his head. “Actually, no, sir. I’m – willing to go along with this.”

“Well, I’m glad to hear that. Now, Leo, you were going to introduce me to these two young men.”

“Dean and Sam Winchester. They’re… experts in this situation.”

“Are you now?” asked the President, leaning forward to shake hands. “It’s very nice to meet you boys.”

Sam murmured something, but Dean fixed the leader of the free world with a steely gaze, and said, “Mr President, can I ask you something?”

President Bartlet nodded. “Of course you can. And may. What is it?”

Did the First Lady recently give birth to alien triplets?”
