Number Two Pome

The water cooler gurgles and someone glances over
Distracted from last week’s Hello
Tiaras and royalty and footballers’ wives
Fading before mundanity
And Philip and Fern seize their opportunity
Dominating the room, no-one looks away
Then adverts: Christmas food and tinsel
And old music
It feels different. Not the Christmas tree
Standing, embarrassed, in the corner
With large mass-produced baubles
Barely covering its dignity
Not the music or tinsel or Christmas clementines on display
Nor the festive feeling of Good Morning
It’s in the urgency – must be seen before Christmas, they said
Must be seen by then
As if January were a wasteland:
Unknown and unreliable
As if hospitals wouldn’t exist
And doctors would disappear
Must be seen before Christmas
So they sit, with raucous television
And a complicated coffee maker
Read old magazines
And rejoice:
They were seen before Christmas
Distracted from last week’s Hello
Tiaras and royalty and footballers’ wives
Fading before mundanity
And Philip and Fern seize their opportunity
Dominating the room, no-one looks away
Then adverts: Christmas food and tinsel
And old music
It feels different. Not the Christmas tree
