Title: A Break in the Tape
Author:

Fandom: NCIS
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: McGee and Abby examine a security tape from Tony's apartment. I started writing this for
ncisdrabble100, but went way over the word limit. TEEEEEEEVA.
A marine goes missing. Questions are asked; leads are followed. Hackles are raised. The marine turns up dead. Gibbs and his team are investigating when someone decides to leave a warning in the shape of a dismembered hand on Tony DiNozzo’s doorstep (why a hand, why DiNozzo, are questions that are never answered).
“We got the CCTV from your apartment building,” says McGee, and Tony nods.
“Course you did, probie.” He shuffles papers, looks busy. McGee looks at the tape.
Half an hour later, he’s down in Abby’s lab.
“So, this guy comes and goes with the box. Not much to identify him with. But there’s a break in the tape,” he says. “Two breaks,” he says, ten minutes later, and Abby nods in agreement.
“The break in the tape will give us a break in the case, Timmy,” she says, and they share a mutual laugh.
They work on the tape. “Not bad,” says McGee.
“Not good enough to beat us,” says Abby.
And she’s right. The hack job done on the tape isn’t good enough, and given a few hours, they restore the missing pieces.
And they watch them.
“Oh!” says Abby.
“My!” says McGee.
“God!” says Abby, then spins round to face McGee. “Did you know? Oh my God, does Gibbs know? What am I saying, Gibbs knows everything! Has he said anything? Maybe he’s laying some kind of trap. They do know about rule 12, right?”
“I—”
“Can you even believe this, Timmy? Did you suspect anything? Have you seen them acting funny? Has Tony mentioned anything recently, cuz you know he can’t stop talking when he’s going out with someone, except for that time it was undercover but he was kinda lying to everyone and it’s totally not like that.”
“I—”
“Except that now they’ve both been lying to us! And Gibbs! Who lies to Gibbs, Timmy? You’d think they’d both know that. Wouldn’t you think they’d both know that? We have to talk to them!”
“I—”
“Now, Timmy!”
She drags him off, leaving the screens in the lab frozen on the image of Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David making out in the hallway of Tony’s apartment building.
Tony was good. But not good enough to beat Abby and McGee.
