The Weekend

Ah, Bath is so fine. Indeed, see the fineness (although less fine are drunken student types roaming the streets).
pim2005 and I bopped up on Friday evening and watched About A Boy and generally larked about nearly getting ourselves killed on multiple occasions. There was some mocking, both ways, I am sad to relate. I bought Molesworth - v. xpensive chiz chiz.
Saturday
Saturday morning *didn’t* dawn bright and fair, sadly, but it wasn’t too bad to start with. We rambled round the shops briefly (ah Monsoon, see the wonder that are your clothes, and grr see how you had my birthday skirt in the sale for half what I paid but nevermind), then went to the Post Office to do post officey things. We wandered up the hill (stopping at exciting shops and ooh I got two little badges, one which said ‘bunny’ and one which said ‘astronaut’ (marginally more exciting) and there were other fine things including baby miniature tea sets for dolls’ houses).
Then huzzah for the Assembly Rooms! We got there shortly before 10.30, and so everyone was lurking outside, looking both dodgy and very old. Pim and I lowered the average age by approximately three centuries. During the morning, we collected
allygatorkin,
athersgeo and Lesley. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth on account of
katie__pillar texting to say she wasn’t well and couldn’t make it, but more on that later.
The books were all excessively pretty and were stroked by us. I am confident they have recovered that trauma by now. I hope. We bopped around and bought things and I saw Kerri which was rather exciting. I bought 4 hardbacks for a pathetically small amount of moola – huzzah! One was an Ethel Talbot, so I was tres pleased. Also the new GGBP Caroline the Second.
We ran away to get pizza etc for lunch, and that was very fine and pizza-like. And we had the sweetest waiter, who was lovely and bought us extra garlic bread. Between pizza and pud I dashed off to the station to meet Katie, who could come after all (Huzzah! Huzzah! Rejoicings!), wearing Ray’s remarkably fine waterproof, which I now covet quite badly. We stopped off in Oxfam on the way back to Pizza Hut and perused their children’s section (curse Oxfam for knowing how to price their books!!) but found a 1950s HB of a Dimsie book for a paltry sum so pur-chased.
Post-pizza (and chocolate dippy things) we went back up to the book fair and looked at more books, though it was rather late by the time we arrived so there was practically nobody around. We bought more books and I bought a picture and an incredibly amazing little paper book (can’t remember what they’re called officially): The Mystery Girl of Study 13. I feel it will be a good read. We rather embarrassingly monopolised Lou Harrison for a while, and I compounded this sin when
weird_bird called by passing the phone over – whoops! I think we scared off a little old man.
We trundled back to the hostel (having lost Ally – alas!) and Ray decided to stay. Katie, Pim and I ran away to the cinema to watch Serenity. It was so, so fine! Its fineness was beyond what I was expecting! But Joss is a creature of darkness and evil. I thought my soul was black and bony but his is blacker and far, far bonier.
Sunday
I believe there were various alarums and excursions during the night, but I mostly slept through. Huzzah for me; less huzzah for those who didn’t.
Lesley had to disappear at the crack of the proverbial in order to get home at a semi-reasonably time, and Ray too had to run back to her car. And then there were three…
Katie, Pim and I wandered up to the Royal Crescent and went oooh and then walked back down to the Jane Austen Centre, did the toury thing – always entertaining – and spurned their tea shoppe on account of the excessive cost of tea. Then we basically went rambling through Bath, which was rather nice (though see me with my whingy whingy ooh my feet hurt). We went back and stroked things in the Tintin shop, and visited Charity Shop Road, though alas only cancer research was open on a Sunday, and bought sandwiches and sat in a park and went in the faerie shop where Pim stroked ballet shoes.
Then we went and stroked books in Waterstones and wrote a particularly fine card for the new pellet and his parents. Then we went home.
Well, sort of. There was accident on the M4, and I ended up getting off at Heathrow and going to Kathye’s for the night. Hurrah for Darren coming to pick me up!
And now it’s Monday and I’m back at work. Huh. How these things fly by.

Date: 2005-10-10 11:37 am (UTC)Can I just say, I thought my best friend and I were the only ones who used 'GBP' and 'pur-chased' in it's split form ! I do believe you may be a kindred spirit.
Agree about Oxfam, they have book dealers come in an take out the valuable stuff and then price the rest at £stupid.99. I realise it's for charity but really, it's not in the spirit of what a charity shop is supposed to be ! Here endeth the rant.
