So, not that this makes me feel in any way better about the FUCKING-KRIPKE-DIE-DIE-DIE-ness of Abandon All Hope, but this episode coda by [livejournal.com profile] maychorian is absolutely beautiful. SPN peeps - go and read!! Now! Good Times.

As I promised yesterday, here are some fic recs of stuff I've read recently (mostly gen(nish)):

The Eggnog Equivalence by [livejournal.com profile] ankaret [Big Bang Theory; Penny and Sheldon]
Penny shambled towards the door, clutching her dressing-gown around her. Ignoring Sheldon wasn't an option. Sheldon would carry on knocking on the door and saying 'Penny' in a weirdly urgent monotone until she opened the door, or, alternatively, until he left his laptop knocking on the door with a small robotic arm whilst he went and got a bottle of water and a small snack to stave off hypoglycaemia. She was astonished no one had stolen his laptop yet. Maybe the robotic arm knew jiu-jitsu.
A fic from last year's Yuletide, this is so sweet! Perfectly Penny and Sheldon.

Five times Becky called Chuck, and one time he called her by [livejournal.com profile] longsufferingly [Supernatural; Chuck and Becky]
Chuck looked at his own story, which was stalling. He was trying to write about something other than Sam and Dean, something he'd actually made up, and so far all he had was "Bill did not hunt the undead. Bill loved flyfishing."
Awesome, awesome Chuck and Becky story, featuring tragically tragic Chuck (no friends) and ridiculously over-enthusiastic Becky. I love these two and this fic is perfectly them!

Fragments by [livejournal.com profile] gnimaerd [Merlin; Morgana, Arthur and Gwen]
Morgana closed her eyes, trying to pull together the blurred, syrupy fragments of her earliest days – the very, very few that featured a woman in soft gowns; a frail smile; very tall to Morgana’s infantile self.
Arthur goes to Morgana after Sins of the Father. I love the dynamic between Arthur, Morgana and Gwen, and the writing's lovely.

Camlann by [livejournal.com profile] ankaret [Merlin; Merlin and Arthur]
The King's advisor wakes with a start and sits up, his shock of greying hair sticking up around his ears, the blankets sliding back and letting in ice-crystal prickles of morning air. He's thought about growing a beard, but Arthur would just say he looked like a prat, and, to be honest, he can't argue.
Future!fic, bringing the Merlin and Arthur we know to Camlann. This is a brilliant take on what these two would be like as grown men with most of their lives behind them - different but recognisable. There's an epic quality, but the relationship between the two characters is much as it is now, including the edge of humour to their interaction. Excellent stuff.

Not Quite The Lady by [livejournal.com profile] tielan [Merlin; Arthur/Gwen]
Queen and linens arrive down at the cottage much later than planned, and if Mildryth scolds her, she takes it meekly, and with only the faintest flush on her cheeks to betray what she was doing all that time.
The King and Queen have sexy times. But really, this fic is about how Gwen can't erase her life as a servant. VG.

Sex Pollen Is A Myth by [livejournal.com profile] seleneheart [SGA; Parrish/Lorne]
"There's no such thing as sex pollen."
"Of course there is. Sheppard's team runs into it all the time. As a botanist, I'd think you'd read those mission reports."
Parrish had no idea how to respond to that. It seemed that 'don't ask, don't tell' also included 'don't see.' He'd read those reports, amused at Sheppard's creativity. "Uh, yeah, I have, but that seems to be a phenomenon confined to susceptible individuals. I thought it was up to the geneticists to figure that out."
"Yeah, it's weird how it mostly just affects him and McKay. But Ronon got it one time, so it's not just Milky Way humans."
"Well, perhaps what they found was more like magical dust, that only affected certain people." Parrish had no intentions of breaking Sheppard's cover, if Lorne was going to be willfully blind.

Lorne. Parrish. Sex pollen. Is there something else I'm supposed to say?

My Father Before Me by [livejournal.com profile] telleer [SGA; Sheppard/McKay]
Rodney is armed with bad latte and his best shirt. It feels completely inadequate. Somehow, something is going to go wrong today. If nothing else, there will be a flood or a hurricane or an earthquake.
I love, love, love this fic. Rodney is left to bring up the children - and he's pretty shit at it. This is real and unapologetic and awesome. Warning: character death.

Last night, Katie, Emma and I went to see Snakes on a Train at the Bad Film Club. So, yeah. There were snakes. On a train. Involved in some barely explained Mayan curse. There was also a drug-smuggling subplot that made little sense, and at the end the woman turned into a giant snake and ate the train. Good times.

In other news, I go on holiday on Sunday!!! I am sure you have all been on tenterhooks waiting to hear about the ticket situation, but rest assured it has all been resolved, by dint of me ringing the train company and LYING with neither blush nor shame. I will be picking them up at Paddington on Saturday (a day early, mark you, in case of any problems – how practical am I?) and all will be well. Holidays!! Currently I am trying to work out how many books I can take. Normally, of course, I’d take a dozen or so, but I am hampered these days by having to take the tiny tiny shiny laptop, phone, MP3 player, and, more to the point, all their respective chargers and cables etc. So, what with them and some clean knickers, I’ll be lucky to have space for any books. Ho hum. I will think of something.

In other news, my black nail varnish is chipping and I didn’t have time (OK, whatevs, I forgot) to do it last night. I look like a Gothy tramp. Must remember to do that this evening.

So, I’ve been watching some original series Star Trek (always a treat). I watched Amok Time and heard, for what would have been the first time ever, the magic words ‘pon far’. Little did the random bloke who came up with this meaningless collection of letters imagine the impact it would have on fandom, I’m sure. However, I was telling Emma and Katie about that particular episode on the train home last night, and about T’Pring challenging etc, and Spock giving her to Stonn, and Katie remarked upon the total gender fail! in the concept.

Which leads me to a fic rec. Or, rather, an author rec. Pat Foley has a series of Amanda/Sarek-centric fic on her ffnet page and her own fic page (link on the ffnet page). I read these stories quite a long time ago, and have been re-reading them in light of my renewed Star Trek love. They look at Sarek and Amanda’s relationship, their relationships with Spock, T’Pau, the rest of Vulcan society, and the press, amongst others. It’s not always easy reading, because the author really highlights the point that although, as Human and Vulcan, Amanda and Sarek have a lot in common, and are happy in their marriage, there are massive differences in their cultural backgrounds and cultural understanding that cause huge problems, chief of which is how husband and wife interact, and how a wife should submit to her husband. The idea that, due to biological imperatives, a Vulcan wife must be submissive, or at least passive, with regard to her husband, is interestingly explored, particularly because that is so contrary to Amanda’s character and background. I would really, really recommend all her fic, but please note that while some of it is normal gen, even a bit fluffy, some of it could be a bit distressing in terms of sexual themes. But yes, very good, and really fleshes out Vulcan society and characters. Ace work. (Also, she has an indulgently good H/C story where Spock turns into a kid and McCoy has to look after him. Spock joins the Pony Club!!)

CBB Summer Frolick

However, enough of such fol-de-rol! Frolick time! CBB peeps who haven’t been on the board, the Summer Frolick this year is taking place on 22 August in Derbyshire and it’s going to be AWESOME. Maybe even AWESOME SQUARED. The programme and venue details are in the Gathering forum, so bop along. To the forum. But to the Frolick, too. Frolick FTW!
